Early mining camps were primitive with miners living in tents and crude shacks. As the mining camps became larger in size, living conditions worsened particularly during winter in the colder regions of North America. Historically, valuable ore strikes were the cause of mass immigration from single men to families in search of unlimited wealth which caused towns from go from boom to ghost. Today’s technology development of new exploration techniques and concepts has led directly to numerous discoveries and allowed companies who own mineral rights into extreme remote areas where it’s impossible for a local “boom town” to exist. The results of this are company owned and controlled mining camps, many being operated on a fly-in-fly-out basis. With these camps, the miners’ “home” and family remains in a major city and the miner commutes many days/weeks in and similar days/weeks out. These camps are sophisticated, well planned with most of the amenities offered in 4 star hotels. Human Resources are the most important asset a company has and they have to be looked after and treated in a manner that will assist a company to maintain a positive human environment. The first and most important step in a camp to maintain this are living conditions and what physical environment it offers.
